How to Do the Breathing Practice for Oboe Lessons

Oboe, and clarinet, they may seem to be different but they have a similarity in them. They are all woodwind instruments. These musical instruments are made up of wood and have to be blown into to produce music. You must have seen the musicians in the orchestras or ensembles playing the woodwind musical instrument. They appear to be simply blowing in, doing movements with fingers and producing great sounds. However, it is not that simple, as it seems. Woodwind musical instruments require great deal of practice along with proper posture, oboe lessons and the right technique to blow air with right pressure. In case you are doing it wrong, your cheeks will start hurting and you will not be able to play the musical instrument consistently, which is an absolute necessity for the ensemble.

For a student who is learning the oboe or any other woodwind instrument, he needs to practice breathing properly. To support the proper breathing you have to sit properly in the right posture. When a person sits with a little slouch or in forward position, his breathing is affected. His lungs do not get enough room to expand and blow properly with force. In case you have witnessed any brass lessons or ensembles, you must have seen everyone sitting in the straight position. This is the correct posture to breath properly along with playing the oboe for hours without getting tired.

• Choose a chair that has a straight back.
• Sit straight without any slouch.
• The shoulders should be in line with the hips and the spinal cord should be free from any burden. This will allow the lungs to elongate themselves producing more air forcefully.

As the oboe is a double reed woodwind instrument, you will need to practice circular breathing. Most of the trainers advise their students to practice with a straw and water. The straw has approximately similar resistance like an oboe; therefore, before practicing on oboe, you must give it a hand to the straw. Drink some water; now spit it out through the straw, keeping it consistent. This technique will help you to control your breathing and spitting air, instead of blowing air, which is the basic of playing the reed in oboe. Learning a music instrument like oboe, and taking its oboe lessons requires the student to be patient. Keep calm and continue practicing. Once you have done it, playing an oboe will be a piece of cake for you.
